Welcome to Life in the Bond, where we offer professional, short-term mental health support specifically designed for animal guardians and pet-supporting professionals and rescues.

We recognize that pet owners and pet professionals often experience feelings of isolation associated with grief, burnout, worry and self-judgement. Over time, we've discovered that talking and listening to others, whether it's a mental health provider or a peer, greatly reduces stress and feelings of overwhelm.

Our goal is to provide you with compassionate education, counseling, resources, and validation to help you cope with these difficult emotions. Remember, you're not alone; we are here to support you throughout your journey.

About Life in The Bond

Kate at Best Friends with THAT DOG_edite

Founder and Director Kate Davis is a dedicated Licensed Clinical Social Worker with nearly 40 years of experience in social work and over 20 years of practice supporting and promoting the human-animal bond. Her career combines practical clinical work with a passion for education and community support. Kate provides compassionate counseling to pet owners who are experiencing grief, anticipatory grief, and general anxiety.  She also offers short-term counseling for pet owners engaged in behavior training programs for challenging pets.

Additionally, Kate supports animal care professionals, who are often overlooked in the mental health care field. Her approach is grounded in empathy, mindfulness, and collaboration, making her a trusted resource for individuals and organizations. Kate co-founded the Compassion Endurance Program with Dr. Katy Felton, D.V.M., which addressed compassion fatigue among animal care professionals. This collaboration reflects her commitment to supporting those who work closely with animals. Their training reached rescues, humane societies, practice manager groups, veterinary clinics, and animal control settings.

Throughout her career, Kate has held various positions in clinical social work and leadership. For two decades, she served as both a full-time and adjunct faculty member at Portland State University's School of Social Work. During this time, Kate taught and mentored numerous students, emphasizing the importance of person-centered clinical social work and the value of the human-animal bond in the lives of clients and their pets. Kate is a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor, as well as an experienced trainer.
